Exercise 5-3: Positions changes & jump

Broad jump with position changes, a distraction and return to handler.
After being positioned in front of a distraction, the dog will demonstrate two position changes, a send over a broad jump, circle a cone (optional) and return directly to handler.

Purpose: Demonstrate stimulus control and cue discrimination with distractions.

Equipment: Broad jump, distraction, cone (optional).

Exercise set-up: The exercise begins when the dog is placed in a sit/stay facing the broad jump. A distraction (toy or treat) is placed on the ground 2 ft. (0.6 m) behind the dog. The handler will then stand on either side of the jump 2 ft. (0.6 m) back from the edge of the last board. Handler will then give a single verbal OR signal cue for two different positions of handler’s choice. The dog is then sent (with one verbal OR signal cue) over the jump, around a cone (optional), and then must return automatically to the handler and offer a front or automatic finish. Handler may pivot to face the dog once the dog has cleared the jump. The exercise ends when the dog is released, either toward the distraction or the handler may pick up the distraction and play with or feed the dog.

Scoring: Pass/Not yet!

Non-qualifiers: Dog does not hold the sit/stay.  Dog takes the distraction before the end of the exercise. Dog does not complete two changes of position.  Dog does not clear the jump or cuts the corner of the jump.  Dog requires multiple cues for any portion of the exercise.  Video does not permit the exercise to be adequately judged.

Tip: None.
