Exercise 5-1: Heelwork

Heelwork in a triangle pattern.
Using four cones, the team will demonstrate a heeling pattern that includes normal, slow and face pace, a halt, two small circles and a send around a cone.

Purpose: Demonstrate various heeling maneuvers with distance work.

Equipment: Four cones.

Exercise set-up: Three cones are set up 15 ft. (4.5 m) apart from each other (cones #2, #3 and #4 from left to right). The fourth cone (cone #1) is placed 15  ft. (4.5 m) from the center cone to create a triangle.   Handler starts at cone #1 with the dog in heel position (sit or stand is acceptable but must be consistent throughout the level) facing cone #3. The exercise begins when the handler cues the dog to begin heeling a clockwise pattern as follows:  Slow pace towards cone #3 (center cone); halfway to cone #3, handler will send dog around the cone while turning to head back to cone #1 at either a slow or normal pace.  The dog should catch up to the handler. Halt at cone #1.  Pivot right to line up with cone #2. Heel from cone #1 to cone #2 and circle left around cone #2.  Heel from cone #2 to cone #3 and circle right around cone #3. Heel from cone #3 to cone #4 and circle left around cone #4. Fast pace from cone #4 to cone #1 and halt. The exercise ends at the final halt. The handler may cue the dog to heel after each halt but at no other time.

Scoring: Pass/Not yet!

Non-qualifiers: Multiple cues to heel.  Talking or praising during the heeling pattern.  More than 12 inches out of position during the heeling pattern.  Failure to circle the cone on cue.  Failure to execute the correct pattern.  Dog alternates between a sit at halt and a stand at halt within the exercise (must be consistent).  Video does not permit the exercise to be adequately judged.

Tip: None.

About Team

TEAM is a virtual titling program that focuses on excellent training progression.

Each level adds complexity for the dog-handler team, presenting them with a wide range of interesting skills to master right from the start.

There’s no reason to hold back on distance work or jumping exercises while teaching your dog to heel!
