L2 Exercise 8: Video Examples, Details and Judging Criteria

Exercise 8:  Hold or retrieve an object
Dog must hold an object for a minimum of one second.

Purpose:   Demonstrate ability to hold an object

Equipment: Any object suitable for a retrieve

Exercise set-up: Handler may be in any position next to or near the dog.  The exercise begins when the object is presented to the dog, either placed on the ground or held by the handler.  The dog’s position is not judged. The exercise begins when the dog notices the object and is either cued to take it or takes it without a cue. The dog should reach forward and take the object or pick it up off the ground. The dog must hold the object for one second. Once the time has elapsed the dog may either drop the object or give to the handler. The exercise ends when the one second count is over.

Scoring: Pass/Not yet!

Non-qualifiers: Dog does not take the object. Handler places the object in the dog’s mouth, as opposed to the dog reaching forward to take it. Dog drops the object before a one second count. Dog turns away from the object when it is presented in an effort to avoid the object.  Dog is cued multiple times to take the object.  Video does not permit the exercise to be adequately judged.
