L1 Exercise 8: Video Examples, Details and Judging Criteria

Exercise 8: Touch a retrieve object
Dog must touch a retrieve object.

Purpose:  Demonstrate early steps of retrieve training.

Equipment: Any object suitable for retrieve other than a toy. This might be a dumbbell, a pen, a kitchen utensil, wooden dowel, etc.

Exercise set-up: Handler holds the retrieve object.  The exercise begins when the handler presents the object to the dog, with or without a single cue, and ends when the dog reaches forward and touches the object.  Dogs that attempt to take the object will not be penalized.

Scoring: Pass/Not yet!

Non-qualifiers: Dog does not clearly seek out and touch the object. Handler cues the dog multiple times. Handler pushes object towards dog, rather than dog moving towards object.  Video does not permit exercise to be adequately judged.

Tip:

Your dog does not need to take the object but must reach forward and touch it.  Be careful not to move it towards your dog!
